One of our nights in Albuquerque was spent at the Special Shapes Glowdeo, which was definitely a highlight of our entire trip! During these balloon glows, the balloons don't ever fly, they stay fully blown up on the ground and the balloonists would make them glow throughout the night. About every half hour, all the balloonists would turn their burners on at the same time, making all the balloons glow simultaneously, we could hear the loud sound of the burners gasifying liquid propane into flames echoing throughout the entire park, and the crowd would cheer, it was such a fun and lively atmosphere.
We picked a spot on the grass to watch the glowdeo as well as the fireworks that were happening later that night. We set up our blankets and chairs and would take turns going out to explore the balloons, the fun vender boulevard or to get treats and snacks from the food vendors.
It was so fun to watch the sunset in the background. There were so many unique and interesting shapes, ranging from animals to stage coaches to the Cristo Redentor statue in Brazil, it was fun to pick out which ones we liked the best. We really liked the gold fish with the monocle and the unicorn. This string of chili peppers, pictures below, seemed so perfect for New Mexico since they are on pretty much every store front and restaurant, but I'm not sure it translates to a hot air balloon as well as some of the other shapes ...
When it got dark enough, it was time for fireworks! They went all out for the show with three different locations of fireworks throughout the show. They began with parachuters letting off tons of fireworks as they floated through the sky.
Then came the main event with giant aerials going off behind a balloon that would glow on and off throughout the show.
Then all of a sudden a long row of fireworks began going off on another side of the park, it was nonstop excitement.
Then came the epic grand finale.
Whew! What an unbelievably fun night, the Balloon Fiesta is so much more than I originally thought it was, it is such a party!
