The High Line, also known as the High Line Park, is a 1.45-mile-long New York City linear park built in Manhattan on an elevated section of a disused New York Central Railroad spur called the West Side Line. Inspired by the 3-mile Promenade plantée (tree-lined walkway), a similar project in Paris completed in 1993, the High Line has been redesigned and planted as an aerial greenway and rails-to-trails park.
The park runs from Gansevoort Street – three blocks below 14th Street – in the Meatpacking District, through Chelsea, to the northern edge of the West Side Yard on 34th Street near the Javits Convention Center. Repurposing of the railway into an urban park began construction in 2006, with the first phase opening in 2009, and the second phase opening in 2011. The third and final phase officially opened to the public on September 21, 2014.
Parts of the old railway are still visible at certain parts of the trail, in some places the rails become part of the landscaping.
There are numerous art installations along the trail most of are modern and some are silly
A lot of the trail was jammed packed since it was a Saturday. There was also a Halloween party that had just ended at one of the buildings on the High Line, we got to see lots of kids in costumes gallivanting around with their trick-or-treat bags. This family, however, needs to win some sort of award, their costumes were perfect! I loved her mermaid tail skirt!
There were several areas right off the main trail, where visitors could sit and enjoy the view. This viewing spot had a gorgeous view of the city, while others were completely enveloped in greenery and you couldn't see any buildings at all, just nature.
Parts of the trail ran along the river, which added another completely different landscape to enjoy.
We walked the whole trail! It was so pleasant and lovely, such a fun activity to do in the city! Since our hotel was only a couple of blocks away, we decided to walk through Chelsea and enjoy the up and coming high fashion, hipster scene that is appearing in that part of the city.
We passed by an adorable ice cream shop and we couldn't resist getting a little sweet, treat to enjoy on our walk home.
We got glimpses of the new One World Trade Center on our stroll
About a block away from our hotel, we discovered this adorable little park that had been all decked out for halloween. We decided to stop and enjoy this festive little corner of the city for a moment.
That night the whole family reconvened for a fun dinner at the Russian Tea Room, then some went to Broadway while others attended an epic Halloween party ...
